Yangmingshan National Park
Carpeted with volcanic craters, steaming fumaroles, and rolling grasslands, Yangmingshan National Park is Taipei’s wild backyard. Just a 40-minute bus ride from the city centre, this sprawling park offers a dramatic escape into a landscape shaped by geothermal forces. Come for the hot springs, the cherry blossoms in spring, and the sweeping views from its highest peak, Qixing Mountain. The park’s network of well-maintained trails, sulfur vents, and lush valleys makes it a favourite for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a breath of fresh air above the city smog.
Highlights & What to See
- Qixing Mountain (Qixingshan) – The park’s highest peak (1120 m) offers panoramic views of Taipei, the coast, and neighbouring mountains. The main trail is a moderate 40-minute climb from the visitor centre.
- Xiaoyoukeng – A post-volcanic landscape of steaming sulfur vents, yellow crystals, and barren hills. The short boardwalk loop lets you get close to the fumaroles without the danger.
- Lengshuikeng (Cold Water Pit) – A grassy basin with a hot spring footbath area and a pond where water buffalo sometimes graze. Great for a relaxed soak after hiking.
- Yangmingshan Flower Seasons – The park bursts into colour with cherry blossoms (February–March), calla lilies (March–May), and hydrangeas (May–July). The Flower Clock and surrounding gardens are prime photo spots.
- Zhuzihu (Bamboo Lake) – A highland valley known for its calla lily fields and rustic farm-to-table eateries. In summer, you can pick your own flowers.
- Yamingshan Hot Springs – Several public and private hot spring facilities dot the park, offering both free foot baths and paid bathing in mineral-rich waters.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to hit the main sights: take bus 260 or 1717 from Taipei Main Station to the Yangmingshan bus terminal, then hop on the park shuttle to Xiaoyoukeng, hike Qixing Mountain, and finish with a hot spring soak at Lengshuikeng. For a deeper exploration, allow a full day to include Zhuzihu and a leisurely lunch at a farm restaurant. If you’re keen on multiple trails, an overnight stay at one of the park’s lodges is a peaceful option.
