Yalgoo is a tiny, historic gold-mining town in Western Australia's Mid West region, about 500 km north-east of Perth. With a population hovering around 50, it's the kind of place where the pub is the social hub and the surrounding outback landscape feels vast and untamed. Yalgoo offers a genuine taste of remote Australian history and a quiet, star-filled sky.
Highlights & What to See
- Yalgoo Hotel/Motel – The iconic pub is the heart of town, with a classic outback bar, cold beer, and friendly locals. It's a great spot for a counter meal and a yarn.
- Historic Buildings – Wander past the old police station, courthouse, and post office, all dating from the early 1900s gold rush era. The town's heritage trail is well signposted.
- Yalgoo Cemetery – A poignant site with graves from the gold rush days, including those of Afghan cameleers and early settlers.
- Yalgoo Racecourse – One of the oldest racecourses in WA, still used for the annual Yalgoo Race Day (usually in August), a major social event.
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Bring a blanket and lie back to see the Milky Way in all its glory.
Suggested Time to Spend
Yalgoo is a stopover rather than a destination in itself. Most travellers spend one night, arriving in the late afternoon, exploring the town's historic sites in the evening, and enjoying a meal at the pub. If you're passing through on a self-drive itinerary, a couple of hours is sufficient to see the main sights, but staying overnight allows you to experience the outback serenity and dark skies.
