Woodgate Beach is a sleepy coastal hamlet on Queensland's southern Burnett coast, where the only soundtrack is the gentle crash of waves and the chatter of rainbow lorikeets. This 16-kilometre stretch of white sand, fringed by pandanus palms and tea-tree scrub, feels a world away from the Gold Coast's high-rises. It's the kind of place where you kick off your thongs at dawn and don't put them back on until dusk.
Highlights & What to See
- The Beach Itself – Sixteen kilometres of uncrowded, patrolled sand. The southern end near the caravan park is the main swimming spot, but walk north for solitude and shell-hunting.
- Woodgate National Park – A coastal heath and paperbark wetland just behind the dunes. Look for wallabies at dusk and listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird.
- Kinkuna Section, Burrum Coast National Park – A short drive north, this remote stretch offers 4WD beach driving, fishing, and camping under a canopy of she-oaks. It's a birdwatcher's paradise.
- Theodolite Creek – A tidal creek perfect for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. Paddle through mangroves and spot mud crabs and herons.
- Woodgate Jetty – A classic timber fishing jetty that juts into the calm waters of Theodolite Creek. Great for a sunset stroll with a rod in hand.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal for Woodgate. Spend your first day lazing on the beach and exploring the national park on foot. On day two, drive the 15 minutes north to the Kinkuna Section for a 4WD adventure or a paddle on Theodolite Creek. If you're pressed for time, a long weekend is enough to soak up the serenity, but you'll wish you'd stayed longer.
