Wingham Brush Nature Reserve is a pocket of ancient lowland subtropical rainforest on the NSW mid-north coast, just a short walk from the historic town of Wingham. This 8-hectare remnant is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind, with a canopy of towering figs, cabbage tree palms, and giant stinging trees. A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk loops through the reserve, allowing you to immerse yourself in the cool, green cathedral without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. It’s a serene stop for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and anyone wanting a quick rainforest fix without a long hike.
Highlights & What to See
- Boardwalk Loop: A 500-metre elevated boardwalk winds through the rainforest, past massive fig trees with buttress roots and epiphytic ferns. Look for the enormous Moreton Bay fig near the entrance.
- Flying Fox Colony: The reserve hosts a large colony of grey-headed flying foxes, which you can watch at dusk as they take off to feed. The interpretive signs explain their role in pollination.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for wompoo fruit-doves, green catbirds, and rose-crowned fruit-doves among the canopy. Early morning is best.
- Historic Wingham: After the reserve, explore the charming town of Wingham with its heritage-listed main street, antique shops, and the Wingham Museum housed in a former school.
- Manning River: The reserve borders the Manning River; a short detour takes you to the riverbank for a picnic or a paddle in a kayak.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours on the boardwalk and in the reserve. If you combine it with a wander through Wingham and a riverside lunch, allocate half a day. The boardwalk is short but rich in detail, so take your time to read the interpretive panels and soak in the atmosphere. For photographers, the soft light of late afternoon is magical.
