Carved by the meandering Werribee River through ancient volcanic and sedimentary rock, Werribee Gorge State Park is a ruggedly beautiful pocket of wild nature less than an hour from Melbourne. This is a place for hikers, rock climbers, and picnickers who want to experience the dramatic landscape of the Brisbane Ranges without the crowds. The park’s centrepiece is the spectacular gorge itself, with sheer quartzite cliffs, tranquil river pools, and abundant birdlife. Whether you’re tackling the circuit walk or just soaking in the views from the lookout, it feels a world away from the city.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors come for a half-day trip, which is enough time to complete the circuit walk (allow 2–3 hours) and linger at the lookout. If you’re keen on rock climbing or want to explore the longer Meander Trail (12 km), plan a full day. The park is best visited in spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the bush is lush; summer can be hot, and winter trails can be muddy. Start early to avoid the heat and crowds.
