Waychinicup National Park is a wild, windswept pocket of southwestern Australia that feels a world away from the tourist trail. Tucked between the Southern Ocean and the rugged Stirling Range, this park offers a raw, untamed coastal experience – think granite boulders, pristine white-sand beaches, and a turquoise inlet where kangaroos hop along the shore. It's a place for quiet immersion in nature, where the only sounds are crashing waves and bird calls.
Highlights & What to See
- Waychinicup Inlet: A stunning estuary where the river meets the sea, perfect for a picnic or a paddle. Keep an eye out for western grey kangaroos grazing on the grassy banks.
- Cheynes Beach: A long, sweeping beach ideal for long walks, though swimming is not advised due to strong rips. The views of the Southern Ocean are mesmerising.
- Granite Outcrops & Coastal Hikes: The park's granite formations are millions of years old. The short walk to the lookout above the inlet offers sweeping views of the coastline.
- Birdwatching: The park is a haven for birdlife, including the rare western whipbird and the noisy, colourful red-winged fairy-wren.
- Wildflowers: In spring (August to November), the park bursts into colour with banksias, orchids, and kangaroo paws.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the park – enough time to walk the main trails, have a picnic at the inlet, and soak up the coastal views. If you're keen on a longer hike or want to simply relax on the beach, allow a full day. The park is best visited in the cooler months (October to April) as summer days can be hot and exposed.
