Rising like a colossal petrified ocean swell from the Western Australian wheatbelt, Wave Rock is one of Australia's most surreal natural wonders. This 15-metre-high, 110-metre-long granite cliff has been sculpted by wind and water over 2.7 billion years, its curved face striped with dark and orange lichen that gives it the appearance of a breaking wave frozen in stone. Located near the small town of Hyden, 340 km east of Perth, it's a mesmerising stop on any outback road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Wave Rock itself – walk along its base and up onto the top for different perspectives; the colours are most dramatic in the late afternoon.
- Hippo’s Yawn – a huge, cave-like rock formation just a short walk away that looks like a gaping hippo mouth.
- The Humps – a granite outcrop with a fascinating history, featuring ancient Aboriginal rock art and a walk trail to the top for panoramic views.
- Mulka’s Cave – a small cave with hand stencils believed to be over 500 years old, linked to the local Aboriginal legend of Mulka the outlaw.
- Wildflowers – if visiting in spring (August–October), the surrounding bushland bursts into a carpet of colourful everlastings and orchids.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can see the main attractions in two to three hours, but to fully appreciate the area and perhaps enjoy a picnic or a short bushwalk, allow half a day. It's a popular day trip from Perth, but staying overnight in Hyden gives you the chance to see Wave Rock at sunrise or sunset when the light is at its best and the crowds are thin.
