Tucked into the lush hinterland of New South Wales, the Waterfall Circuit is a spectacular loop walk that plunges you into a world of misty cascades, ancient ferns, and towering eucalypts. This is the kind of place where the air smells of damp earth and the constant roar of falling water is your soundtrack. For self-drive travellers, it’s an easy detour from the coast, offering a refreshing dose of nature that feels a world away from the beach crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Katoomba Falls – The circuit’s grand centrepiece, plunging over 200 metres into the Jamison Valley. Time your walk for late afternoon when the light hits the cliff face and rainbows dance in the spray.
- Leura Cascades – A series of delicate, terraced waterfalls that tumble through a mossy gorge. The short side track to the base of the falls is a must for photographers.
- Wentworth Falls – A powerful three-tiered cascade framed by dramatic sandstone cliffs. The lookout here offers one of the best views in the entire Blue Mountains.
- Fern Bower & the Rainforest – The circuit winds through a cool, dark gully where tree ferns arch overhead and the understorey is a tangle of sassafras and coachwood. It feels prehistoric.
- Echo Point Lookout – While not strictly on the circuit, this iconic viewpoint of the Three Sisters is a short drive away and pairs perfectly with the walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the full Waterfall Circuit in about 4–5 hours, depending on how often you stop to soak in the views. If you’re short on time, you can tackle just the section between Leura Cascades and Katoomba Falls in around 2–3 hours. The track is well graded but includes many steps, so pace yourself and bring water. For a full day, combine the circuit with a picnic lunch at one of the many scenic lookouts.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Blue Mountains National Park – The circuit is part of this vast World Heritage-listed park, offering endless other walks, lookouts and Aboriginal cultural sites.
- Katoomba – The main hub of the mountains, with excellent cafés, art galleries and the historic Carrington Hotel. Great for a post-walk coffee.
- Leura – A charming village known for its boutique shops, gardens and the beautiful Leura Cascades. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
- Wentworth Falls – The town itself has a lovely lake and picnic area, plus access to the Charles Darwin Walk along the valley rim.
- Jenolan Caves – About an hour’s drive west, these ancient limestone caves feature stunning underground formations and guided tours that complement the above-ground waterfalls.
