Waikerie

Perched on the cliffs above the Murray River, Waikerie is a sun-baked South Australian town that feels like a secret playground for adventurers. With its citrus groves, riverfront caravan parks, and a laid-back country vibe, it’s the kind of place where you can spend the morning kayaking through a river gorge and the afternoon sampling local wines. The town’s name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘something to remember’, and you’ll soon see why.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal: one full day to paddle the river and explore the cliffs, another to visit nearby wineries and the Banrock Station wetlands, plus an evening to enjoy a riverside barbecue. If you’re on a self-drive itinerary along the Murray, Waikerie makes a relaxed overnight stop – you can easily spend a morning kayaking before continuing south to Renmark or north to the Barossa.
