Western Australia's Wildflower Trail is a spectacular self-drive route that bursts into colour each winter and spring (June–November). Stretching from Perth north to Kalbarri and inland to the wheatbelt, this is one of the world's great floral displays, with over 12,000 species of wildflowers, many found nowhere else on Earth. The trail winds through national parks, granite outcrops, and coastal heathlands, offering a sensory overload of everlastings, orchids, grevilleas, and kangaroo paws. It's a paradise for photographers, botanists, and anyone who loves the great outdoors.
Highlights & What to See
- Kalbarri National Park – Dramatic red cliffs and river gorges carpeted with spring wildflowers; don't miss the 'Nature's Window' rock formation.
- Lesueur National Park – A biodiversity hotspot with rare plants and a scenic drive through heathlands.
- Coomallo Nature Reserve – Famous for its purple and pink everlastings that transform the landscape into a living painting.
- Wongan Hills – Granite outcrops surrounded by orchids and feather flowers; the wildflower walk trail is a must.
- Pinnacles Desert, Nambung National Park – Ancient limestone pillars rising from golden sands, plus spring blooms.
- York, Toodyay & New Norcia – Historic towns along the trail with charming cafes, heritage buildings, and wildflower displays in nearby reserves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 5–7 days to do the full trail justice, from Perth up to Kalbarri and back via the inland route. A shorter 3–4 day loop from Perth to Cervantes and the Pinnacles is perfect for a weekend escape. The best wildflower viewing is from late August to early October, but timing varies by region – check local bloom forecasts. Drive at a leisurely pace, stopping often at roadside lookouts and walking trails.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Cervantes & Jurien Bay – Coastal towns with white beaches, lobster fishing, and nearby wildflower reserves.
- Nambung National Park (Pinnacles) – Otherworldly desert landscapes just a short detour from the trail.
- New Norcia – Australia's only monastic town, with Spanish-style architecture and a peaceful retreat.
- Avon Valley – Scenic countryside with wildflower walks, wineries, and the historic town of Northam.
- Moore River & Guilderton – River mouth and coastal dunes, good for kayaking and birdwatching.
