On Kangaroo Island’s rugged south coast, Vivonne Bay is a vision of postcard-perfect Australian coastline: a sweeping crescent of bone-white sand, turquoise waters, and a backdrop of low scrubby dunes. The bay consistently ranks among Australia’s best beaches, yet it rarely feels crowded — especially if you arrive early or outside peak season. This is a place for pure coastal immersion, from swimming and fishing to walking the wild headlands.
Highlights & What to See
- Vivonne Bay Beach — The main draw: a 5 km stretch of fine white sand lapped by clear, gentle waves. Perfect for swimming, beachcombing, or simply soaking up the serene atmosphere.
- Pelican Lagoon — A short walk from the beach, this shallow lagoon is a haven for birdlife, especially pelicans and black swans. Bring binoculars.
- Harriet River Mouth — Where the river meets the sea, creating a calm, shallow estuary ideal for kayaking or spotting stingrays and small fish.
- Vivonne Bay Jetty — A historic timber jetty popular for fishing (expect whiting, mullet, and salmon trout) and sunset strolls.
- Seal Bay Conservation Park — A short drive west, this is the place to see a colony of Australian sea lions lazing on the sand. Boardwalk tours offer close-up views without disturbing them.
Suggested Time to Spend
Vivonne Bay works well as a half-day stop or a full-day beach escape. If you’re driving the island’s southern loop, allow 2–3 hours to swim, walk the beach, and grab a bite at the nearby Vivonne Bay General Store (famous for its fish and chips and homemade pies). For a more relaxed pace, pack a picnic and spend the entire afternoon; the light in late afternoon is stunning for photography. Overnight stays are limited — most visitors base themselves in Kingscote or American River and visit as a day trip.
