Utah National Parks Road Trip
Utah’s Mighty Five national parks — Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion — form one of America’s most spectacular road trips. This is a land of otherworldly rock formations, deep canyons, and vast desert skies that shift from fiery red to deep indigo at dusk. The classic route loops from Salt Lake City or Las Vegas through a landscape that feels more like a geological museum than a drive. For international travellers, it’s an unforgettable immersion into the American West, best tackled over seven to ten days with plenty of stops for short hikes and photo ops.
Highlights & What to See
- Arches National Park — Home to over 2,000 natural stone arches, including the iconic Delicate Arch. Hike the Devils Garden Trail for a string of arches, or catch sunrise at the Windows Section.
- Bryce Canyon National Park — Famous for its crimson hoodoos (spire-shaped rock formations). The Navajo Loop and Queen’s Garden Trail drops you among them; sunrise at Sunrise Point is magical.
- Canyonlands National Park — Vast and wild, with four distinct districts. Island in the Sky offers sweeping canyon views; the Mesa Arch trail is a must for photographers at dawn.
- Capitol Reef National Park — A hidden gem with the Waterpocket Fold, a 100-mile warp in the earth’s crust. Drive the scenic Highway 24, hike to Hickman Bridge, and try a pie at the historic Gifford Homestead.
- Zion National Park — Slot canyons, emerald pools, and towering cliffs. The Narrows (wading through the Virgin River) and Angels Landing (a thrilling summit) are unforgettable. Take the park shuttle to avoid crowds.
- Scenic Byway 12 — A stunning drive between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef, winding through red rock canyons, pine forests, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Pull over at the Hogback for vertiginous views.
- Dead Horse Point State Park — Overlooks the Colorado River and Canyonlands; a short detour from Moab for a classic desert panorama.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least 7–10 days for a relaxed loop that includes all five parks and key stops like Moab and Torrey. A rushed 5-day itinerary could hit Arches, Canyonlands, and Bryce, but you’ll miss the quieter wonders of Capitol Reef and the depth of Zion. Spend 2 days in Moab (Arches + Canyonlands), 1 day driving to Bryce via Scenic Byway 12 (overnight near Bryce), 1 day at Bryce, then 2 days in Zion. Add a day for Capitol Reef if time allows. The driving distances are deceptive — allow extra time for photo stops and short hikes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park — Iconic red sandstone buttes on the Arizona-Utah border, a two-hour drive from Moab. A guided tour with a Navajo guide adds cultural depth.
- Goblin Valley State Park — A surreal landscape of mushroom-shaped hoodoos, ideal for a quirky detour between Capitol Reef and Moab.
- Natural Bridges National Monument — Three massive natural bridges set in a canyon; a peaceful stop near Blanding, Utah, with a scenic drive and short walks.
- Lake Powell & Glen Canyon National Recreation Area — Houseboat rentals, kayaking, and the stunning Horseshoe Bend overlook near Page, Arizona; a good add-on from Zion or Capitol Reef.
- Salt Lake City — If starting or ending here, explore Temple Square, the Great Salt Lake, and the lively food scene before heading south.
