Moab is the adventure capital of the American Southwest, a red-rock wonderland where the Colorado River cuts through ancient sandstone and the night sky blazes with stars. This small Utah town is the gateway to two of the most spectacular national parks in the US: Arches and Canyonlands. Whether you're a hiker, mountain biker, off-road enthusiast, or just someone who wants to stare at arches and canyons, Moab delivers jaw-dropping landscapes and endless outdoor thrills.
Highlights & What to See
- Arches National Park – Home to over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the iconic Delicate Arch. The park's fiery red rocks are especially stunning at sunrise and sunset.
- Canyonlands National Park – A vast, rugged landscape of deep canyons, mesas, and buttes. The Island in the Sky district offers dramatic overlooks, while the Needles district is a hiker's paradise.
- Dead Horse Point State Park – A state park with one of the most photographed views in the West: a sheer drop to the Colorado River snaking through a canyon 2,000 feet below.
- Moab's Slickrock Bike Trail – A world-famous mountain bike trail that climbs and descends over domed sandstone. Even beginners can enjoy the practice loop.
- Colorado River Rafting – Float through red-rock canyons on the Colorado or tackle the big rapids of the daily Westwater Canyon run.
- La Sal Mountains – A cool alpine escape just 30 minutes from town, with hiking trails and wildflower meadows in summer, and great views of the red-rock country below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 3–4 days in Moab, which gives you time to explore Arches and Canyonlands, do one river trip or mountain bike ride, and still have a leisurely meal in town. If you're short on time, a two-day blitz can cover the highlights of Arches (half-day) and Canyonlands Island in the Sky (full day). For serious hikers or off-roaders, budget a full week to also explore the Needles district, the Maze, and the lesser-known trails around town.
