Urana is a tiny, sun-baked town in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, cradled between Lake Urana and the surrounding wheatbelt. With a population hovering around 200, it’s the kind of place where the pub is the social hub and the main street feels like a film set from another era. For travellers on a self-drive journey through the Riverina, Urana offers a genuine slice of outback Australia – quiet, dusty, and unexpectedly charming.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Urana – A large, shallow lake that’s a haven for birdlife (pelicans, swans, and migratory waders). It’s perfect for a picnic, a stroll along the shore, or simply watching the sunset paint the water pink and gold.
- Urana Hotel – A classic country pub with a verandah, cold beer, and hearty counter meals. Pop in for a chat with the locals – it’s the heart of town.
- Heritage Buildings – Wander the main street to see the old bank, post office, and the grand (now empty) Urana Shire Hall, all built in the late 19th century when the town was a bustling railway centre.
- Sheep & Wheat Country – The real attraction is the landscape: endless paddocks of golden wheat, grazing merinos, and the big Riverina sky. Stop at any roadside pull-off to soak it in.
Suggested Time to Spend
Urana is a brief stop rather than a destination. Half an hour to an hour is enough to stretch your legs at the lake, grab a drink at the pub, and snap a few photos of the heritage buildings. If you’re a keen birdwatcher or photographer, you might linger for a couple of hours. Most travellers use it as a lunch or coffee break en route between Wagga Wagga and Jerilderie or the Murray River.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jerilderie – 40 minutes south, this historic town is famous for its Ned Kelly connections (the Jerilderie Letter) and has a lovely main street with cafes and antique shops.
- Lockhart – 30 minutes east, known for its preserved heritage streetscape and the annual Lockhart Bakery’s famous pies.
- Wagga Wagga – An hour north, the largest city in the Riverina, with the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, the Botanic Gardens, and the Wiradjuri walking track along the Murrumbidgee River.
- Murray River towns (Tocumwal, Yarrawonga) – About 90 minutes south, these offer river cruises, swimming, and waterside accommodation – a perfect end to a Riverina road trip.
