Úbeda, a jewel of the Spanish Renaissance, is a city where golden stone buildings and grand plazas transport you back to the 16th century. This UNESCO World Heritage site, along with its sister city Baeza, offers a perfectly preserved architectural ensemble that rivals any in Europe. Wander through labyrinthine streets lined with palaces and churches, and soak up the relaxed Andalusian atmosphere in its charming tapas bars.
Highlights & What to See
- Sacra Capilla del Salvador: This stunning chapel, designed by Diego de Siloé, is a masterpiece of Plateresque architecture. Don't miss the intricate facade and the altarpiece inside.
- Plaza Vázquez de Molina: The heart of Renaissance Úbeda, surrounded by the Palacio de las Cadenas (now the town hall), the Palacio del Deán Ortega, and the Church of Santa María de los Reales Alcázares.
- Palacio del Marqués de Mancera: A magnificent palace with a beautiful courtyard, now a paradox hotel. Even if you're not staying, pop in to admire the architecture.
- Hospital de Santiago: A striking example of Renaissance civil architecture, with a grand facade and a central courtyard. It now houses cultural events.
- Cerro del Almendral: For panoramic views over Úbeda and the surrounding olive groves, hike up to this hilltop. It's especially beautiful at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Úbeda deserves a full day to explore its major sights and soak up the atmosphere. If you're short on time, a half-day will allow you to see the main plazas and a couple of palaces. Many visitors combine Úbeda with Baeza, which is just 10 minutes away, so plan for two days to cover both towns at a relaxed pace. Spend the morning wandering the historic centre, enjoy a long tapas lunch, and then visit the Sacra Capilla del Salvador in the afternoon.
