Once a sleepy fishing village on Lantau Island, Tung Chung has transformed into a modern transport hub and gateway to some of Hong Kong's most spectacular natural and cultural attractions. With the Ngong Ping 360 cable car soaring overhead and the South China Sea lapping at its shores, this town offers a compelling blend of urban convenience and outdoor adventure. Whether you're connecting to the airport or setting out to explore Lantau's wild side, Tung Chung is a surprisingly rewarding stop.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers use Tung Chung as a half-day stop en route to Ngong Ping or Tai O, but give it a full day if you want to explore both the cable car and the village. Arrive early (around 9am) to avoid queues for the cable car, then spend the morning at Po Lin Monastery and have lunch at Tai O. Afternoon hikers can tackle a section of the Lantau Trail. If you're flying out of Hong Kong, consider a final-morning visit before heading to the airport—Tung Chung is just one MTR stop away.
