Perched high in the Pilbara, Tom Price is a frontier town built on iron ore, surrounded by ochre-red ranges and deep gorges. It’s the gateway to Karijini National Park and offers a genuine outback experience with a strong mining heritage, stunning sunsets, and a surprising café culture that thrives against the red dust.
Highlights & What to See
- Karijini National Park – the star attraction, with plunging gorges, cool rock pools, and waterfalls like Hancock, Joffre, and Fern Pool. Perfect for swimming and hiking.
- Mount Nameless (Jarndunrunha) – a challenging but rewarding 4WD track or steep walk to the summit for panoramic Pilbara views, especially at sunset.
- Tom Price Mine Lookout – get a sense of the region’s wealth with a view over the enormous open-cut iron ore mine, one of the largest in the world.
- Pilbara Aboriginal art sites – seek out ancient rock engravings and paintings around the area, with guided tours available through local operators.
- Hamersley Gorge – a stunning red-rock gorge with a natural spa pool, a short drive from town and less crowded than Karijini’s main gorges.
- Tom Price Visitor Centre – excellent for local info, maps, and a small museum on mining and Aboriginal culture.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves in Tom Price for 2–3 days to explore Karijini National Park thoroughly. Spend one day on the park’s gorges (start early to beat the heat), another on Mount Nameless and the mine lookout, and a third for a more relaxed visit to Hamersley Gorge or a cultural tour. If you’re short on time, a single full day can cover the mine lookout and a few Karijini highlights, but you’ll wish you had longer.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Millstream-Chichester National Park – a quieter park with palm-fringed pools and Fortescue Falls, about 2 hours north-west.
- Paraburdoo – a smaller mining town 45 minutes south, with a scenic airport approach and the start of the Karijini Drive.
- Exmouth & Ningaloo Reef – a longer detour (5–6 hours west) but worth it for the reef snorkelling and whale sharks.
- Pilbara Coast (Dampier, Karratha) – about 4 hours north, offering coastal landscapes, rock art at Burrup Peninsula, and the Dampier Archipelago.
