Stretching across central Nevada, Toiyabe National Forest is a vast and rugged expanse of high desert mountains, pine-clad ridges, and deep canyons. This is a place where the silence is profound, broken only by the wind and the call of a hawk. For travellers seeking solitude, starlit skies, and a taste of the Old West, Toiyabe offers a raw, unfiltered wilderness experience that feels a world away from the neon lights of Las Vegas.
Highlights & What to See
- Arc Dome Wilderness: A premier backpacking destination with alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and the chance to spot bighorn sheep. The Arc Dome summit rewards with panoramic views of the Toiyabe Range.
- Toiyabe Crest Trail: A challenging 70-mile (113 km) route along the spine of the range, perfect for multi-day treks. Shorter day hikes from trailheads like Kingston Canyon offer accessible slices of the scenery.
- Historic Mining Ghost Towns: Explore remnants of the 19th-century silver boom at places like Belmont and Manhattan, where weathered wooden buildings and rusted machinery tell stories of boom-and-bust.
- Big Creek & Stewart Creek: Two of the most scenic canyons for hiking, camping, and fishing. The aspen groves explode with gold in autumn, making this a photographer’s dream.
- Dark Sky Viewing: With minimal light pollution, the forest is a designated Dark Sky Sanctuary. On a moonless night, the Milky Way arches overhead in stunning clarity.
Suggested Time to Spend
To properly experience Toiyabe National Forest, plan for at least two to three days. This allows time for a major hike (like a section of the Toiyabe Crest Trail) and a day to explore ghost towns. If you’re a dedicated backpacker, a five-day trip can cover the full crest trail. The forest is remote, so factor in driving time from major towns — at least an hour from Tonopah or Austin. Pack all supplies in advance, as services are scarce.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Great Basin National Park: A few hours east, home to ancient bristlecone pines and Lehman Caves, offering a different flavour of Nevada’s high country.
- Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park: Combine fossil exploration (ancient marine reptiles) with a ghost town visit at Berlin, about an hour south.
- Tonopah: A historic mining town with quirky museums, a charming historic district, and the famous Tonopah Brewing Company for a post-hike pint.
- Monitor Valley & Mount Jefferson: For those with a high-clearance vehicle, this area offers hot springs, petroglyphs, and the remote Toquima Range.
