Just north of Ubud, Tirta Empul is one of Bali’s most sacred water temples, known for its holy spring and ritual purification baths. The temple complex, built around a large rectangular pool fed by a natural spring, has been a site of spiritual cleansing for over a thousand years. The clear, cool water flows through 30 stone spouts, each with a specific meaning, and locals and visitors alike come to bathe under them as part of a purification ritual. The setting is serene, with lush greenery and traditional Balinese architecture, making it a deeply atmospheric place to experience Balinese Hindu culture.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1 to 1.5 hours at Tirta Empul, which allows time for the purification ritual, exploring the temple grounds, and taking photos. If you plan to participate in the bathing ritual, factor in extra time for changing and drying off. The temple is best visited early in the morning (around 8–9am) to avoid crowds and experience the serene atmosphere. It can get busy by late morning with tour groups.
