Just north of Ubud, Tirta Empul Temple is one of Bali's most revered water temples, where the Balinese Hindu faithful come to perform a ritual purification in the sacred mountain springs. The temple's name means 'holy water spring,' and its clear, cool pools have been a source of spiritual cleansing for over a thousand years. As a visitor, you can observe the ritualistic bathing – or even join in – surrounded by ancient stone carvings and the lush green of central Bali. The temple is a living piece of culture, not a museum, so dress respectfully and prepare to be moved by the quiet devotion of those around you.
Highlights & What to See
- Purification Pools: The main attraction is a series of rectangular pools fed by a spring, with water spouting from stone spouts. Locals and tourists alike line up to immerse themselves under each spout in a specific order, praying for cleansing of mind and body.
- Jaba Pura (Outer Courtyard): Enter through a classic Balinese split gate and wander the peaceful outer grounds, where you'll find shrines, gardens, and a large koi pond.
- Jaba Tengah (Inner Courtyard): This is where the purification happens – a raised platform with a large pool and two smaller pools. The water is believed to have healing properties, and you can rent a sarong and participate.
- Jaba Jero (Main Temple): The most sacred area, closed to non-worshippers. Its multi-tiered meru roofs and ornate carvings are visible from the outer courtyards.
- Gunung Kawi Sebatu: Often overlooked, this nearby water temple is quieter and equally beautiful, with springs and lotus ponds – a serene alternative if Tirta Empul feels crowded.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 1–2 hours for a meaningful visit. If you plan to do the purification ritual, budget extra time for changing into a sarong (available for rent at the entrance), waiting in line, and drying off afterward. Early morning (before 9am) is the least crowded and most atmospheric time, when the mist hangs over the pools and the temple is filled with the sound of chanting. Combine with nearby attractions like Gunung Kawi Sebatu or the Tegallalang Rice Terraces for a half-day trip from Ubud.
