Terra Nova National Park
Straddling the rugged coast of Newfoundland’s Bonavista Bay, Terra Nova National Park is a wild tapestry of boreal forest, bog, and rocky shoreline. The park’s name—Latin for “new land”—hints at its raw, untamed beauty. Here, moose amble through fragrant fir stands, bald eagles patrol the coves, and the Atlantic gnaws at ancient cliffs. This is a place for deep breaths, quiet paddles, and the kind of stillness that only a northern wilderness can offer.
Highlights & What to See
- Newman Sound – The park’s heart, this deep fjord offers sheltered kayaking, boat tours, and a chance to spot humpback whales and icebergs drifting by in early summer.
- Malady Head Trail – A 5 km loop through boreal forest and barrens, ending at a headland with panoramic views of the sound and distant islands.
- Ocean View Trail – An easy 1.5 km walk along the coast, where interpretive signs reveal the region’s geological story and the hardy plants clinging to the granite.
- Moose Watching – Dawn and dusk along the Trans-Canada Highway or on the Sandy Pond Road, these gentle giants are often seen grazing in the roadside bogs.
- Sandy Pond – A warmish (for Newfoundland!) pond with a sandy beach, ideal for a swim, canoe rental, or a picnic under the spruces.
- Dark Sky Preserve – In summer and autumn, the park’s minimal light pollution makes for spectacular stargazing; the Milky Way arches clearly overhead on clear nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that two full days allow a satisfying taste of the park. Spend the first day hiking the Malady Head and Ocean View trails, with a moose-watching drive at dusk. Dedicate the second day to kayaking on Newman Sound or exploring the Sandy Pond area. If you have a third day, consider a boat tour out into Bonavista Bay for icebergs and whales, or drive the scenic route to the nearby communities of Port Blandford and Glovertown for fresh seafood and local crafts.
