Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the start of many of New Zealand's greatest walks. Nestled on the shores of Lake Te Anau, the country's second-largest lake, this small town offers a serene base for exploring the dramatic fiords, ancient rainforests, and alpine peaks of the region. The lake's mirror-like waters reflect the surrounding mountains, and the town itself has a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe with excellent cafes, a lakefront walking track, and easy access to some of the most spectacular wilderness on Earth.
Highlights & What to See
- Milford Sound – The crown jewel of Fiordland, a dramatic fiord carved by glaciers with towering cliffs, waterfalls, and wildlife. A cruise is the classic way to experience it, but kayaking or scenic flights offer a different perspective.
- Doubtful Sound – Wilder and more remote than Milford, this fiord is accessed via a boat ride across Lake Manapouri and a bus over Wilmot Pass. It's quieter and often described as more serene.
- Lake Te Anau – Walk or cycle the Lakefront Track, rent a kayak, or take a scenic boat cruise. The lake is stunning at sunrise and sunset.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves – A boat trip across the lake leads to limestone caves where thousands of glowworms create a starry ceiling effect. A magical experience.
- Kepler Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, a 60-km circuit that starts and ends in Te Anau. You can also day-hike sections like the Luxmore Hut track for panoramic views.
- Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre – Excellent exhibits on the area's geology, flora, and fauna, plus helpful staff to plan your adventures.
Suggested Time to Spend
Te Anau deserves at least two full days. Spend the first day exploring the town, walking the lakefront, and visiting the glowworm caves. Dedicate the second day to a full-day trip to Milford Sound (allow 10–12 hours return by road) or Doubtful Sound (a full-day tour from Te Anau). If you're a hiker, add an extra day for a section of the Kepler Track or a flightseeing tour over the fiords. Three to four days allows for a relaxed pace and a mix of activities.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Manapouri – A tiny lakeside village 20 minutes south, the departure point for Doubtful Sound tours and the start of the Kepler Track. Worth a stop for its peaceful vibe.
- Milford Sound / Piopiotahi – The ultimate day trip from Te Anau, but also worth an overnight stay at the Milford Sound Lodge for a more immersive experience.
- Queenstown – A 2-hour drive east, this adventure capital offers bungee jumping, skiing, and a lively food scene. Combine both for a classic South Island road trip.
- Fiordland National Park – Beyond the sounds, explore the Hollyford Valley, Lake Marian, or the Routeburn Track. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Area.
