Tarwin Lower is a sleepy farming village on the banks of the Tarwin River, just a few kilometres from the wild surf beaches of Victoria's Bass Coast. It's the kind of place where life slows down – pelicans glide over the river, dairy cows graze green paddocks, and the local pub serves a cold beer to a handful of regulars. For travellers, it's a peaceful base to explore the nearby coastal wonders of Cape Liptrap, Venus Bay, and the Anderson Peninsula, or a quiet stopover between the South Gippsland hinterland and the Great Ocean Road.
Highlights & What to See
- Tarwin River & Estuary – Kayak or paddleboard up the calm, winding river or simply watch the birdlife from the bank. The estuary is a haven for black swans, herons and the occasional dolphin.
- Venus Bay Beach – Just a 10-minute drive away, this long, sandy beach is famous for its surf breaks and the annual Venus Bay Surf Classic. It's also a prime spot for beach fishing and walking the dunes.
- Cape Liptrap Coastal Park – A rugged, windswept headland with dramatic cliffs, wild seas and walking trails. Keep an eye out for kangaroos and echidnas in the heathland.
- Anderson Peninsula – A hidden gem for birdwatchers and hikers, with trails through coastal scrub leading to secluded coves and panoramic views of Bass Strait.
- Tarwin Lower Pub – The historic pub is the social heart of the town, serving up hearty country meals and a friendly welcome.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tarwin Lower itself is tiny – you can explore the riverbank and have a meal at the pub in an hour or two. But to really appreciate the area, allow at least a full day: spend the morning kayaking the river, the afternoon at Venus Bay or hiking in Cape Liptrap, and finish with a sunset beer at the pub. If you're a keen surfer or birdwatcher, a two-night stay is ideal.
