Rising from the turquoise waters of the South Pacific, Tanna Island is Vanuatu's most dramatic and culturally rich destination. This is where you'll find the world's most accessible active volcano, Mount Yasur, whose thunderous eruptions light up the night sky. Beyond the volcano, Tanna offers pristine rainforests, black-sand beaches, and a deep immersion into the ancient kastom (custom) way of life. It's a place where the earth literally breathes fire, and where the rhythms of daily life are still governed by tradition and the land.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Yasur – Stand at the rim of one of the world's most active volcanoes and watch lava bombs arc into the air. A guided sunset tour is the quintessential Tanna experience.
- Yakel Village – Visit a traditional kastom village where residents live without modern amenities, preserving ancestral customs, dress, and rituals. A humbling and unforgettable cultural encounter.
- Port Resolution – A scenic bay with black-sand beaches, hot springs, and a great spot for kayaking or simply watching the volcano from a distance.
- John Frum Cargo Cult Villages – Explore the fascinating villages around Sulphur Bay where followers of the John Frum movement maintain their unique beliefs and rituals, complete with symbolic 'airfields' and bamboo radios.
- Rainforest Waterfalls & Blue Holes – Hike to hidden waterfalls like Lenakel Falls or swim in the crystal-clear freshwater blue holes scattered across the island.
Suggested Time to Spend
Three to four days is the ideal length for Tanna. This allows for the essential Mount Yasur sunset trip, a full-day cultural tour to Yakel and John Frum villages, and a day to relax on the coast or explore the interior. If you're an avid hiker or want to dive deeper into the island's volcanic landscapes, extend to five or six days. Tanna's bumpy roads mean travel between sites can be slow, so factor in extra time for transfers.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Vila, Efate – Vanuatu's capital and main hub, with excellent restaurants, markets, and offshore islands like Hideaway Island. A short flight from Tanna.
- Mount Yasur Volcano (same island) – While you'll already see it, multiple visits to the volcano (day and night) are highly recommended for different perspectives.
- Erromango Island – A wild, less-visited neighbour with rugged hiking, ancient rock art, and a fascinating missionary history. Accessible by small plane or boat.
- Aniwa Island – A flat coral island with stunning beaches, perfect for a day trip from Tanna's east coast by boat.
