Stretching across the red heart of the Northern Territory, the Tanami Road is one of Australia's great outback adventures—a rugged, remote route that connects Alice Springs to the Kimberley region of Western Australia. This 1,000-kilometre dirt road traverses the Tanami Desert, offering a raw and unfiltered experience of the Australian interior. For the self-drive traveller, it's a journey into isolation, where the vastness of the landscape and the brilliance of the night sky leave an indelible mark. This is not a trip for the faint-hearted; it demands preparation, resilience, and a thirst for the wild.
Highlights & What to See
- Wolf Creek Meteorite Crater – A stunning impact crater 880 metres wide, accessible via a short detour. The stark contrast of the crater against the desert floor is unforgettable.
- Tanami Desert Wildlife – Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, dingoes, and a surprising variety of birds. During wildflower season, the desert blooms with colour.
- Aboriginal Rock Art at Tjungkula – Ancient petroglyphs and paintings at this remote site offer a glimpse into the deep cultural history of the Warlpiri people.
- The Granites Gold Mine – A historic gold mining area that still operates today. While you can't enter the mine, the surrounding landscape tells stories of fortune and hardship.
- Stargazing – With zero light pollution, the Tanami Road offers some of the best night skies on Earth. The Milky Way arcs overhead in a dazzling display.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least 3 to 5 days to complete the Tanami Road, depending on your vehicle and comfort with rough conditions. The road is notoriously corrugated and can be slow going, especially after rain. Most travellers break the journey into three or four days, camping along the way or staying at the roadhouses at Rabbit Flat and Yuendumu. Start early each day to avoid driving in the heat of the afternoon, and always carry extra fuel, water, and supplies.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
