Tahiche
Nestled in the heart of Lanzarote, Tahiche offers a captivating blend of volcanic landscapes, artistic heritage, and authentic Canarian life. This small town is best known as the home of César Manrique, the visionary artist and architect whose influence shapes the island's unique aesthetic. With its dramatic lava fields, whitewashed buildings, and proximity to the island's top attractions, Tahiche serves as an excellent base for exploring Lanzarote's natural wonders and cultural treasures.
Highlights & What to See
- Fundación César Manrique – The artist's former home, built into a volcanic bubble, showcases his genius in blending art with nature. The five underground chambers and stunning outdoor spaces are a must-see.
- Jameos del Agua – A spectacular volcanic tunnel transformed by Manrique into a cultural center with a natural lagoon, concert hall, and restaurant. The white crabs (jameitos) are endemic to this cave system.
- Mirador del Río – Perched on a cliff in the north, this viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramas of the Chinijo Archipelago. The structure itself is a masterpiece of Manrique's design.
- Parque Nacional de Timanfaya – A surreal lunar landscape of volcanic craters and lava flows. Take the guided coach tour or a camel ride to fully appreciate the otherworldly terrain.
- Caldera de los Cuervos – One of the best-preserved volcanic cones on the island, offering a short but rewarding hike into its crater.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least two full days to experience Tahiche and its surroundings. Dedicate one day to the Fundación César Manrique and Jameos del Agua, and another to Timanfaya National Park and the Mirador del Río. If you have a third day, explore the nearby beaches of Famara or the wineries of La Geria. The town itself is compact and can be explored in a couple of hours, but the real magic lies in the surrounding attractions.
