Stretching from Wollongong down to the Victorian border, the South Coast Wine Region is a hidden gem of cool-climate viticulture, where rolling green hills meet the wild Pacific. This is a place for travellers who love a good drop but also crave coastal walks, historic villages, and a slower pace. The region's wineries are small, family-run affairs, and the tasting rooms are refreshingly unpretentious — you'll often chat directly with the winemaker. Expect elegant Chardonnays, vibrant Pinot Noirs, and some of Australia's best crisp, sparkling wines.
Highlights & What to See
- Shoalhaven Coast Wine Trail — A scenic drive linking more than 20 cellar doors, with standout stops like Coolangatta Estate (one of the oldest vineyards in the region) and Two Figs Winery, known for its organic practices and stunning valley views.
- Jervis Bay — Not a wine region itself, but a must-visit for its blinding white sands (Hyams Beach) and crystal-clear waters. Pair a morning kayak with an afternoon tasting at nearby wineries.
- Milton & Ulladulla — Charming historic towns with excellent farmers' markets, art galleries, and a handful of boutique wineries like Bawley Vale Estate, which produces a standout Verdelho.
- Batemans Bay & the Clyde River — The southern gateway to the region, where you can sample oysters straight from the river and visit wineries such as Gartelmann Wines, set on a picturesque hillside.
- Pebbly Beach — Famous for its friendly kangaroos that laze on the sand, this is a perfect spot for a picnic with a bottle of local fizz.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two to three days to explore the South Coast Wine Region properly. Spend the first day meandering the Shoalhaven Coast Wine Trail, stopping for lunch at a winery café. Use the second day to combine a morning at Jervis Bay with an afternoon visit to the wineries around Milton. If you have a third day, head south to Batemans Bay for oysters and a final tasting. The region is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace — rushing would miss the point.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kangaroo Valley — A lush, green valley with historic bridges, canoeing on the river, and a handful of cellar doors.
- Nowra & the Shoalhaven River — The region's main town, with a good range of accommodation and access to the lower reaches of the wine trail.
- Murramarang National Park — Coastal wilderness with excellent walking tracks, rock pools, and secluded beaches — ideal for a nature break between tastings.
- Canberra District Wine Region — A two-hour drive inland, offering a completely different cool-climate wine experience, especially Shiraz and Riesling.
