Rising abruptly from the plains of northern Uruguay, Sierra de los Piojos is a rugged, little-visited range of granite hills that rewards hikers with sweeping panoramas, hidden waterfalls, and a genuine sense of discovery. This is a place for those who want to trade crowds for solitude and connect with the raw landscapes that define the region's interior.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal for experiencing the Sierra's highlights without rushing. Dedicate one full day to summiting Cerro de los Piojos and exploring the Saltos del Penitente, and a second day to Valle del Lunarejo and a visit to an estancia. If you have a third day, consider a longer hike along the ridge or a rock-climbing session at Piedra del Águila. The area is best visited from late spring to early autumn (October to April) when temperatures are pleasant.
