Shark Bay Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Western Australia, dazzles with its turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and incredible biodiversity. This is where the desert meets the ocean, creating a surreal landscape of seagrass meadows, stromatolites, and dugongs. The park is a paradise for snorkelers, kayakers, and wildlife enthusiasts, offering encounters with dolphins, rays, turtles, and the famous Monkey Mia dolphins. Whether you're exploring by boat, 4WD, or on foot, Shark Bay delivers a raw, untamed beauty that feels like the edge of the world.
Highlights & What to See
- Monkey Mia – World-famous for its daily dolphin encounters, where wild bottlenose dolphins swim right up to the shore. Stick around for the ranger talks and learn about the research program.
- Shell Beach – A stunning beach made entirely of tiny white cockle shells, stretching for over 100 kilometres. Take a dip in the hyper-saline water – it's like floating in a bathtub.
- Hamelin Pool – Home to the most diverse and abundant collection of living stromatolites on Earth. These ancient microbial structures are over 3,000 years old and offer a glimpse into the planet's early life.
- François Peron National Park – A rugged peninsula with red cliffs, sweeping bays, and abundant wildlife. Spot emus, kangaroos, and go bushwalking to the perched lakes for stunning views.
- Dugong Viewing – Shark Bay has one of the world's largest populations of dugongs (sea cows). Take a boat tour or kayak through the seagrass beds to see these gentle giants grazing.
- Snorkeling at Little Lagoon – A calm, shallow lagoon perfect for beginners. Swim among colourful fish, rays, and sea turtles in crystal-clear water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least three full days to experience the highlights. Spend day one at Monkey Mia and the nearby beaches, day two exploring Hamelin Pool and Shell Beach, and day three tackling François Peron National Park. If you have a 4WD, you can access more remote spots like the Peron Homestead and the perched lakes. The best time to visit is from May to October when the weather is mild and wildlife is abundant.
