Deep in the heart of Western Australia's tall-tree country, Shannon National Park is a sanctuary of ancient forests and wild rivers. This is one of the state's largest national parks, yet it feels wonderfully remote — a place where the scent of eucalypt and damp earth fills the air, and the only sounds are birdsong and the rush of the Shannon River. It's a must for self-drive adventurers seeking genuine wilderness without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Shannon River Walk Trail: A spectacular 2.5 km loop through towering karri and jarrah forest, with boardwalks and viewing platforms over the river. Look for platypuses at dawn or dusk.
- Giant Tingle Trees: The park protects some of the world's largest eucalypts, including the iconic 'Big Tree' with a girth of over 20 metres. A short walk leads to this natural cathedral.
- Shannon Dam: A peaceful picnic and swimming spot on the river, perfect for a midday break. The dam was built to supply water for steam trains — remnants of the old railway are nearby.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for western grey kangaroos, black cockatoos, and if you're lucky, the elusive numbat. The park is a haven for birdwatchers.
- Self-Drive Adventure: The park's gravel roads are ideal for a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle, winding through forests and offering access to secluded camping spots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park's walks and picnic areas. To truly absorb the serenity, consider an overnight stay at one of the basic campgrounds (no facilities, so come prepared). If you're short on time, the Shannon River Walk and a stop at the dam can be done in 2–3 hours. The park is best visited between spring and autumn, as winter rains can make some tracks impassable.
