Rising abruptly from the plains northwest of São Paulo, Serra do Japi is a dramatic escarpment cloaked in rare Atlantic Forest, offering a wild escape just an hour from the city. This protected area is a biodiversity hotspot, home to howler monkeys, toucans, and over 400 species of orchids. The cool, misty climate and network of trails make it a favourite for hikers and mountain bikers seeking solitude and sweeping views.
Highlights & What to See
- Trilha da Cachoeira – A rewarding hike through dense forest to a series of waterfalls, where you can swim in natural pools surrounded by ferns and bromeliads.
- Mirante do Japi – The main lookout point, offering panoramic views of the Jundiaí valley and, on clear days, the São Paulo skyline in the distance.
- Orquidário Municipal – A small but impressive orchid garden showcasing many of the species found in the reserve, with guided tours available.
- Pedra da Baleia – A distinctive whale-shaped rock formation accessible via a moderate trail, perfect for photos and picnics.
- Centro de Visitantes – Start here for trail maps, exhibits on local ecology, and advice from park rangers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day (8–10 hours) exploring Serra do Japi, which allows time for two or three hikes and a stop at the orchid garden. If you're keen on a longer trek, consider an overnight stay in Jundiaí or one of the eco-lodges near the reserve. The trails are well-marked but can be steep and muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes are essential.
