Selarón Steps
Rio de Janeiro's Selarón Steps (Escadaria Selarón) are a vibrant, ever-evolving mosaic staircase created by the late Chilean artist Jorge Selarón. Spanning 215 steps and covered in over 2,000 tiles collected from more than 60 countries, this iconic landmark is a testament to the city's creative spirit and a must-see for any visitor. The steps connect the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighborhoods, offering a kaleidoscope of colors and patterns that make it one of Rio's most photographed spots.
Highlights & What to See
- Mosaic Staircase: The main attraction is the staircase itself, with its ever-changing mosaic of tiles, including many depicting pregnant women (Selarón's muse). Look for tiles from around the world, including a few you might recognize from your own country.
- Artistic Details: Selarón constantly added to the steps until his death in 2013, so the artwork is a living collage. Notice the red-painted steps that form the backdrop and the hand-painted tiles among the donated ones.
- Neighborhood Vibe: The steps are in the bohemian Lapa district, known for its samba clubs, street art, and lively nightlife. The area around the steps is filled with bars and music venues, especially on weekends.
- Photo Opportunities: The steps are a photographer's dream, with vibrant colors and patterns. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light and fewer crowds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow about 30 minutes to 1 hour to walk the steps, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere. If you want to explore the surrounding Lapa neighborhood, including its famous aqueduct (Arcos da Lapa) and samba clubs, plan for an additional 1–2 hours. Combine with a trip to Santa Teresa for a full day exploring Rio's artistic side.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Lapa Arches (Arcos da Lapa): Just a short walk away, this impressive aqueduct is a symbol of Rio and a popular gathering spot, especially during samba nights.
- Santa Teresa: This hilltop neighborhood is known for its winding streets, colonial mansions, artist studios, and the famous Bonde tram. It's a short walk uphill from the steps.
- Centro (Downtown Rio): Explore Rio's historic center, including the Municipal Theatre, National Library, and the Confeitaria Colombo café, all within walking distance.
- Escadaria do Bairro de Fátima: Another mosaic staircase nearby, less crowded but equally artistic.
