Winding through the heart of the Colorado Rockies, the San Juan Skyway is a 236-mile loop that offers some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the United States. This scenic byway, also known as the Million Dollar Highway, climbs over high mountain passes, skirts sheer cliffs, and passes through historic mining towns, all while delivering jaw-dropping views of the San Juan Mountains. It's a road trip that rewards drivers with every twist and turn, from the rugged peaks of the Uncompahgre Wilderness to the charming streets of Durango and Silverton.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two to three days to drive the full loop, allowing time for stops in the main towns and short hikes. A relaxed pace is essential: the drive itself takes 7–8 hours without stops, but you'll want to linger in Durango, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride. Add extra days if you plan to hike, ride the train, or explore Mesa Verde. For a self-drive itinerary, start in Durango, head north to Silverton and Ouray, then loop back via Telluride and Cortez.
