Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer
Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a sun-bleached village on the Camargue coast, feels like the end of the road – and in many ways it is. This is where the Rhône meets the Mediterranean, where wild white horses gallop through salt marshes and flamingos paint the sky pink at sunset. For international travellers, it’s the quintessential Camargue base: raw nature, Gypsy pilgrimages, and a rampart of seafood restaurants lining the beachfront.
Highlights & What to See
- Église des Saintes-Maries – This fortified 12th-century church is the spiritual heart of the town. Climb the roof for sweeping views over the sea and salt flats; inside, the crypt honours the two Saint Maries and their servant Sara, patron saint of the Roma people.
- Camargue Nature Reserve (Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue) – Just east of town, the reserve is a wetland wonderland. Join a guided 4x4 or horseback tour to spot flamingos, egrets, Camargue bulls, and the famous white horses roaming free.
- Beach & Promenade – The long sandy beach stretches for miles. It’s wild and windy, perfect for kite-surfing or a bracing walk. The promenade is lined with casual cafés serving bouillabaisse and grilled fish.
- Gypsy Pilgrimage (Pèlerinage des Gitans) – Held in late May, this vibrant festival sees thousands of Roma pilgrims flock to the church for processions, flamenco music, and horse parades. Even if you’re not here for the event, the town’s Roma heritage is palpable year-round.
- Salt Flats & Étang de Vaccarès – The shimmering salt pans south of town are otherworldly. Rent a bike and cycle the dykes to see salt mountains and flocks of flamingos feeding in the shallows.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two nights is ideal: one full day to explore the town and its immediate coastline, and a second day to venture into the Camargue reserve by horseback or 4x4. If you’re short on time, a long day-trip from Arles (45 minutes away) is feasible, but you’ll miss the magical early morning light over the marshes and the sleepy evening ambience of the port.
