Rocky Mountain National Park is a pristine wilderness of soaring peaks, alpine lakes, and abundant wildlife in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. With over 415 square kilometres of protected terrain, it offers some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the United States. Whether you're hiking to a crystal-clear lake, spotting elk in the meadows, or simply driving the iconic Trail Ridge Road, this park is a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Highlights & What to See
- Trail Ridge Road – One of America's most scenic drives, this 77-kilometre route crosses the Continental Divide at over 3,700 metres, offering panoramic views and access to high-alpine tundra.
- Bear Lake – A stunning turquoise lake surrounded by rugged peaks. It's the starting point for many easy to moderate hikes, including the popular Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lakes trail.
- Alpine Visitor Center – Perched at 3,595 metres, this is a great spot to learn about the park's ecology and enjoy breathtaking views of the Never Summer Mountains.
- Wildlife Watching – Keep an eye out for elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, moose, and black bears. The Kawuneeche Valley and Moraine Park are prime viewing areas.
- Longs Peak – The park's highest summit at 4,346 metres. While a challenging climb for experienced mountaineers, the views from the base are spectacular.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience the park, plan for at least two to three days. This allows you to drive Trail Ridge Road, tackle a few hikes, and enjoy sunrise or sunset at Bear Lake. If you're short on time, a full-day visit can still cover the highlights—drive the road, stop at key viewpoints, and take a short walk. Note that the park requires a timed entry permit during peak season (late May to mid-October), so plan ahead.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Estes Park – The charming gateway town just outside the park's east entrance, with shops, restaurants, and the historic Stanley Hotel.
- Grand Lake – A quieter lakeside town on the park's west side, perfect for water activities and a more relaxed vibe.
- Boulder – About 1.5 hours east, this lively college town offers excellent dining, the Flatirons, and the Celestial Seasonings tea tour.
- Rocky Mountain National Park – Consider combining with a visit to the nearby Indian Peaks Wilderness or Arapaho National Forest for more remote hiking.
