Rocha is a sleepy coastal gem on the NSW North Coast, where the hinterland meets wild, empty beaches. This laid-back farming and fishing town offers a genuine slice of Australian country life, with a burgeoning food scene and easy access to some of the most pristine coastline in the state. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the morning watching pelicans at the river mouth and the afternoon exploring national parks.
Highlights & What to See
- Rocha Beach & Shelly Beach: Two stunning, often deserted beaches ideal for long walks, swimming, and surfing. Shelly Beach is a particular favourite for its sheltered cove and rock pools.
- Rocha River: Kayak or paddleboard up the tranquil river, or simply enjoy the views from the riverside park. Look out for stingrays and dolphins.
- Bongil Bongil National Park: Just south of town, this park protects coastal heath, wetlands, and ancient paperbark forests. Walk the boardwalks and spot swamp wallabies and abundant birdlife.
- Hinterland Drives: Head west into the lush dairy country around Bellingen and Dorrigo. The scenic drive through the Never Never valley is dotted with farm gates selling cheese, fruit, and artisan produce.
- Local Produce & Cafés: Rocha’s small but excellent food scene includes farm-to-table cafés, a microbrewery, and a popular farmers’ market (Sundays). Try the local macadamias and bush-tucker-inspired dishes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Rocha itself can be explored in a day, but to truly unwind, plan for two to three nights. This allows time for a full day on the beaches and river, plus a day trip into the hinterland or south to Coffs Harbour. The pace here is slow – embrace it.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coffs Harbour: 30 minutes south – bigger, with the iconic Big Banana, a marina, and more dining options.
- Sawtell: 20 minutes south – a charming beach village with a great café scene and a beautiful surf beach.
- Bellingen: 30 minutes west – a creative, alternative town in the hills, famous for its markets and the Bellingen River.
- Dorrigo National Park: 1 hour west – part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area, with spectacular waterfalls and walking trails.
- Yuraygir National Park: 1 hour north – one of the last great stretches of undeveloped coastline in NSW, perfect for multi-day coastal walks.
