Rising 710 metres above the city atop Corcovado Mountain, the colossal Art Deco statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic landmark. With arms stretching 28 metres wide, the soapstone-and-concrete figure surveys the sprawling city, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Guanabara Bay. A journey here is as much about the ride up through the Tijuca Forest as the breathtaking panorama from the summit.
Highlights & What to See
- Cristo Redentor Statue: Gaze up at the 38-metre-tall monument, completed in 1931, and snap photos from the viewing platform. Arrive early to avoid crowds and catch the morning light.
- Panoramic Views: On a clear day, the 360-degree vista takes in Copacabana, Ipanema, the Maracanã stadium, and the Serra dos Órgãos mountains. Look for Sugarloaf Mountain and the iconic beaches.
- Corcovado Train Ride: The cog railway (Trem do Corcovado) winds through the Atlantic rainforest for 20 minutes – keep an eye out for toucans and monkeys along the track.
- Tijuca National Park: The statue sits within this urban rainforest. Combine your visit with a hike to Pico da Tijuca or a waterfall stop at Cascatinha Taunay.
- Sunset Visits: The platform is especially magical at golden hour, when the city lights begin to twinkle below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day: 2–3 hours for the round trip from Rio’s centre, including the train ride, queue time, and 30–45 minutes on the summit. For a more relaxed experience, combine with a morning hike in Tijuca or an afternoon at Copacabana. Avoid weekends and holidays when queues can stretch over an hour.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Santa Teresa: This bohemian hilltop neighbourhood is a short taxi ride away, with colonial mansions, street art, and the Selarón Steps.
- Lapa: Famous for its aqueduct arches and samba clubs – perfect for an evening of live music and caipirinhas.
- Copacabana & Ipanema: Rio’s classic beaches are a 20–30 minute drive from Corcovado. Grab a coconut and watch the sunset.
- Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar): Take the cable car for another iconic view – many visitors do Christ the Redeemer in the morning and Sugarloaf in the afternoon.
- Jardim Botânico: A lush botanical garden with over 6,000 plant species, located at the base of Corcovado.
