Stretching 160 km west of Alice Springs, Tjoritja West Macdonnell National Park is a stunning expanse of ancient sandstone ranges, dramatic gorges, and ochre-red cliffs that shift colour with the desert light. This is the heart of Arrernte Country, where soaring gaps, permanent waterholes, and ghost gums create an otherworldly landscape. The park offers some of the Northern Territory's best short walks, swimming spots, and Aboriginal rock art sites — all within easy reach of Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap: A dramatic cleft in the range with a permanent waterhole and easy walking track; keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn or dusk.
- Standley Chasm: A narrow, steep-walled chasm where the sun funnels down at midday, igniting the quartzite walls in fiery orange — a photographer’s dream.
- Ochre Pits: Multi-hued cliffs of ochre used by Arrernte people for ceremony and trade; a sacred site with interpretive signs explaining its cultural significance.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole: A deep, permanent waterhole framed by red cliffs — perfect for a cooling dip on a hot day, with a short nature walk nearby.
- Serpentine Gorge: A walk through a narrow gorge leads to a lookout over the surrounding ranges; the waterhole is home to the rare serpentine gudgeon.
- Glen Helen Gorge: The western gateway to the park, where the Finke River cuts through the range — a great spot for birdwatching and sunset views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors explore the park as a day trip from Alice Springs, covering the eastern highlights (Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Ochre Pits, Ellery Creek) in 4–5 hours. To fully experience the western gorges (Serpentine, Ormiston, Glen Helen) and do some longer walks, plan for a full day or stay overnight at Glen Helen Resort. If you have two days, you can hike sections of the Larapinta Trail, which runs through the park — a multi-day walk between gorges is a bucket-list experience.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Ormiston Gorge & Pound: A spectacular natural amphitheatre with a permanent waterhole and excellent walking trails, including the Ormiston Pound Walk.
- Redbank Gorge: A remote, narrow gorge at the park’s western end, popular for a seasonal swim or a paddle through the chasm.
- Finke River: One of the world’s oldest rivers, flowing through the park — explore dry riverbed walks or 4WD tracks in the western section.
- MacDonnell Ranges (East): The eastern counterpart, with sites like Emily Gap, Jessie Gap, and Trephina Gorge, often combined on a longer Red Centre itinerary.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: A 4–5 hour drive southwest, but easily linked for a classic Red Centre road trip via the Stuart Highway.
