Rabual
Rabual, on the island of New Britain, is a town shaped by volcanic fury. The 1994 eruption of Mount Tavurvur buried much of the town under ash, creating a haunting landscape where the old administrative centre lies abandoned under a grey shroud. Today, Rabual is a fascinating destination for adventurous travellers drawn to raw volcanic scenery, WWII history, and vibrant Melanesian culture. The harbour, a flooded volcanic caldera, is spectacularly scenic.
Highlights & What to See
- Tavurvur Volcano: This active volcano is the star attraction. A boat trip across the harbour brings you to the foot of the smoking cone; you can hike to the crater rim for an unforgettable view of the vent.
- Rabaul Volcano Observatory: Perched on a ridge, this observatory offers superb views of the caldera and informative displays on the region's volcanic activity.
- Submarine Base & WWII Tunnels: Rabual was a key Japanese base during WWII. Explore the extensive tunnel network used for storage and defence, and see wrecked aircraft and ships in the harbour.
- Rabaul Market: A colourful hub of local life, selling fresh produce, betel nut, and handmade bilum bags. It's a great place to mingle with locals.
- Duke of York Islands: A short boat ride away, these idyllic islands offer pristine beaches, snorkelling, and a chance to experience traditional island life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days in Rabual to comfortably see the main sights. Day one can be a boat trip to Tavurvur and a visit to the observatory; day two covers WWII sites and the market. If you have extra time, add a day trip to the Duke of York Islands. The pace is relaxed – embrace 'island time'.
