Rabual

Rabual, on the island of New Britain, is a town shaped by volcanic fury. The 1994 eruption of Mount Tavurvur buried much of the town under ash, creating a haunting landscape where the old administrative centre lies abandoned under a grey shroud. Today, Rabual is a fascinating destination for adventurous travellers drawn to raw volcanic scenery, WWII history, and vibrant Melanesian culture. The harbour, a flooded volcanic caldera, is spectacularly scenic.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least two full days in Rabual to comfortably see the main sights. Day one can be a boat trip to Tavurvur and a visit to the observatory; day two covers WWII sites and the market. If you have extra time, add a day trip to the Duke of York Islands. The pace is relaxed – embrace 'island time'.
