Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the Philippines' most awe-inspiring natural wonders. This 8.2-km underground river winds through a spectacular limestone karst landscape, featuring dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, cathedral-like chambers, and a rich ecosystem of bats, swiftlets, and unique flora. Accessible only by guided boat tour from the coastal village of Sabang, the park offers a surreal journey into the earth's depths, where the river meets the sea in a stunning lagoon. Beyond the cave, the park encompasses pristine beaches, jungle trekking, and diverse wildlife, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Highlights & What to See
- Underground River Boat Tour: The main attraction – a 45-minute guided paddle through the cave system, marveling at immense limestone formations and spotting bats and swiftlets.
- Sabang Beach: A beautiful stretch of white sand where you can relax before or after your tour, with clear waters perfect for a quick swim.
- Monkey Trail & Jungle Trek: Short hikes through the park's forest, where you might encounter long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, and endemic birds.
- Ugong Rock: A limestone formation offering a thrilling zip-line and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
- Mangrove Paddle Boat Tour: Explore the lush mangrove forest along the Sabang River, spotting kingfishers, herons, and fiddler crabs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day for the park experience. Most tours from Puerto Princesa City depart early morning (around 6–7 AM) and return by late afternoon (4–5 PM). The underground river boat tour itself takes about 45 minutes, but you'll also spend time on the scenic drive (about 2 hours each way), a brief orientation, and a short hike to the cave entrance. Add an extra hour for the mangrove tour or beach time if you wish. For a more relaxed pace, consider staying overnight in Sabang to explore the park and nearby attractions over two days.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Puerto Princesa City: The gateway to the park, with the Puerto Princesa Baywalk, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (for wildlife and souvenirs), and the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center.
- Honda Bay: A cluster of islands with excellent snorkeling and diving spots, such as Starfish Island, Pandan Island, and Snake Island, just a short boat ride from the city.
- Sabang Village: A laid-back coastal town with local eateries, souvenir shops, and access to the Underground River. It's also the start of treks to the nearby waterfalls and caves.
- El Nido: A stunning archipelago about 4–5 hours north by van, famous for its limestone cliffs, lagoons, and island-hopping tours. Combine with the Underground River for a week-long Palawan itinerary.
- Port Barton: A quieter alternative to El Nido, with beautiful beaches and snorkeling, located about halfway between Puerto Princesa and El Nido.
