Perched on the rugged northern coast of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz is a classic seaside town that blends volcanic beaches with lush gardens, historic architecture, and a lively promenade. Unlike the purpose-built resorts of the south, this town retains an authentic Canarian character, with narrow cobbled streets, old fishing harbour, and a year-round spring-like climate. It's a place where you can wander through banana plantations, swim in natural tidal pools, and enjoy fresh seafood with views of the Atlantic — all within a compact, walkable area.
Highlights & What to See
- Lago Martiánez — a stunning complex of seawater swimming pools designed by César Manrique, with cascading waterfalls, bridges, and sun terraces. It's the perfect spot for a safe, scenic swim.
- Jardín Botánico — one of Spain's oldest botanical gardens, established in 1788, showcasing a vast collection of tropical and subtropical plants from around the world.
- Playa Jardín — a black-sand beach also designed by Manrique, with volcanic stone sculptures and palm-fringed gardens. The waves can be strong, but it's great for sunbathing and people-watching.
- Old Town & Plaza del Charco — the historic heart of Puerto, with colourful Canarian balconies, lively bars, and the town's main square, where locals gather for tapas and live music.
- Mirador de La Paz — a viewpoint offering sweeping panoramas of the coast, the Teide volcano, and the Orotava Valley. Best visited at sunset.
- Casa de la Aduana — a restored 17th-century customs house that now hosts cultural exhibitions and a lovely café terrace overlooking the harbour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to explore the town's highlights at a relaxed pace, including a morning at Lago Martiánez, an afternoon in the botanical garden, and an evening wandering the old town. If you're short on time, a full day is enough to see the main sights, but you'll miss the unhurried charm that makes Puerto de la Cruz special. The town also works well as a base for exploring northern Tenerife, so consider staying longer if you plan day trips.
