Port Campbell National Park is a dramatic slice of Victoria's Shipwreck Coast, where the Southern Ocean has carved limestone cliffs into towering stacks, arches, and blowholes. This is the heart of the Great Ocean Road's most photogenic stretch, a place where you can feel the raw power of the sea and the haunting beauty of a coastline that has claimed many ships. The park is compact but packed with iconic sights, making it an essential stop on any Great Ocean Road itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- The Twelve Apostles – The star attraction: a series of limestone stacks rising from the ocean. Visit at sunrise or sunset for the most dramatic colours and fewer crowds.
- Loch Ard Gorge – A sheltered beach with towering cliffs, named after the shipwreck of the Loch Ard. Explore the gorge and read the story of the two survivors.
- Gibson Steps – Descend 86 steps to the beach for a ground-level view of the Apostles and the sheer cliff face.
- London Bridge – A natural arch that once connected to the mainland; part of it collapsed in 1990, leaving two tourists stranded. The view from the lookout is spectacular.
- The Grotto – A sinkhole with a natural window looking out to the sea, accessible via a short boardwalk.
- Arch and Razorback – Two more impressive rock formations easily seen from the clifftop lookouts.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can see the main highlights in a half-day, but to truly appreciate the park, plan for a full day. Start early at the Twelve Apostles before the tour buses arrive, then explore Loch Ard Gorge and the quieter western lookouts. Pack a picnic and take your time walking the clifftop trails. If you're driving the Great Ocean Road, this is the perfect place to break the journey between Apollo Bay and Warrnambool.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Warrnambool – A historic port city with whale watching (June–September), the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, and great seafood.
- London Bridge Lookout – Already in the park, but worth listing as a separate stop along the Great Ocean Road.
