Piaui Coast
Stretching for nearly 300 kilometres along Brazil’s northeastern shoulder, the Piauí Coast is a wild, wind-sculpted realm of rust-red cliffs, emerald mangroves and near-empty beaches. This is the sun-baked edge of the state of Piauí, a place where dunes meet the Atlantic and where the pace of life is dictated by the rhythm of the tide. For travellers seeking raw coastal beauty without the crowds of Fortaleza or Recife, this is a genuine discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Delta do Parnaíba: A maze of islands, channels and mangroves – explore by boat to spot scarlet ibis, caymans and river dolphins.
- Pedra do Sal: A dramatic red sandstone cliff that plunges into the sea, perfect for sunset photography and watching local fishermen.
- Praia da Pedra do Sal: A long, wild beach with powerful surf and a handful of rustic beach bars serving fresh grilled fish.
- Ilha do Caju: A private nature reserve (open to visitors) with pristine beaches, dunes, and a turtle conservation project.
- Parque Nacional de Sete Cidades: Inland from the coast, this national park features surreal rock formations and ancient cave paintings – a worthwhile day trip.
- Parnaíba City: The region’s gateway, with a historic centre of colourful colonial buildings, a lively market, and the waterfront Porto das Barcas.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least three to four days to appreciate the Piauí Coast properly. Base yourself in Parnaíba (two nights) to explore the delta and Pedra do Sal, then spend a night closer to the dunes – perhaps in a pousada near Praia da Pedra do Sal – to catch sunrise over the cliffs. A full-day boat trip through the delta is essential, and you’ll want half a day for Ilha do Caju. If you have a fifth day, drive inland to Sete Cidades National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Jericoacoara (Ceará): Further east, this famous beach town offers world-class kitesurfing and stunning sunsets – a 4–5 hour drive from Parnaíba.
- Barra Grande (Piauí): A laid-back beach village south of the delta, known for its kitesurfing conditions and relaxed vibe.
- Delta do Parnaíba (the delta itself): Worth exploring in greater depth with overnight stays on the islands for a true immersion.
- Teresina: The state capital, about 4 hours inland, offers museums and a riverside park – a good stop en route from other parts of Brazil.
