Peniche is a ruggedly beautiful fishing town on Portugal's Silver Coast, where the Atlantic Ocean crashes against dramatic cliffs and world-class surf breaks. This is a place of authentic maritime character, with a walled historic centre, a fortress that once held political prisoners, and some of the best seafood you'll eat anywhere. Beyond the town, the Berlengas archipelago offers pristine nature, while the surrounding coastline is a paradise for surfers and coastal walkers.
Highlights & What to See
- Peniche Fortress – A 16th-century fortress that later served as a prison under the Estado Novo regime. Today it houses a museum detailing the town's history and the resistance movement, with poignant exhibits.
- Berlengas Island – A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this car-free island is accessible by boat from Peniche. Explore the fort of São João Baptista, hike the rugged trails, and snorkel in crystal-clear waters.
- Praia do Baleal – A stunning crescent beach with consistent waves, perfect for surfers of all levels. The village of Baleal, connected by a sandbar, has a laid-back vibe and great sunset views.
- Supertubos – One of Europe's most famous beach breaks, known for its powerful, hollow waves. Even if you don't surf, watching the pros from the cliffs is a spectacle.
- Historic Centre (Centro Histórico) – Wander the narrow streets within the town walls, where whitewashed houses are adorned with azulejo tiles. The main church, Igreja de São Pedro, is worth a peek.
- Museu da Renda de Bilros – A small museum dedicated to the intricate art of bobbin lace, a local craft that has been practised for generations.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal for Peniche. Spend the first day exploring the town – the fortress, historic centre, and a seafood lunch at the bustling port. Dedicate a full second day to a boat trip to the Berlengas (book in advance in summer). If you're a surfer, you'll want at least two days to hit the breaks, with early mornings best for glassy conditions. A third day allows for a relaxed coastal drive to nearby Óbidos or Nazaré.
