Nestled in the heart of Western Australia's karri forests, Pemberton is a serene escape into towering woodlands, tumbling waterfalls, and world-class wine country. This small town is the gateway to the southern forests, where you can climb giant trees, canoe along the Pemberton-Northcliffe Rail Trail, or simply breathe in the crisp, eucalyptus-scented air. With a laid-back vibe and a thriving food scene, it's a perfect stop on a self-drive itinerary through the state's southwest.
Highlights & What to See
- Climb the Gloucester Tree – Ascend this 61-metre fire-lookout tree via a series of metal pegs for panoramic views over the karri canopy.
- Explore the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree – Another giant karri with a spiral staircase; the climb is a rite of passage for adventurous travellers.
- Paddle the Pemberton-Northcliffe Rail Trail – Rent a canoe or kayak to glide along the calm Warren River, passing through towering forests and farmland.
- Visit the Gloucester National Park – Home to the Gloucester Tree and lush walking trails, including the Cascades walk to a series of pretty waterfalls.
- Sip at local wineries – The Pemberton wine region is known for its cool-climate varietals, especially chardonnay, pinot noir, and sparkling wines. Try Pemberton Fine Wines or Salitage.
- Discover the Big Brook Dam – A tranquil spot for a swim, picnic, or short forest walk; keep an eye out for native birds and kangaroos.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for two to three days to get the most out of Pemberton. One day is enough for a quick taste – climb a karri tree and visit a winery – but with two nights you can also tackle the Rail Trail, explore the national parks, and enjoy a leisurely meal at one of the town's excellent cafés. If you're self-driving, Pemberton makes a great overnight stop between Margaret River and Albany.
