Rising sharply from the heart of Hong Kong Island, the Peak Tram is a funicular railway that has been hauling passengers up to Victoria Peak since 1888. The journey itself is a thrill—a steep, 7-minute ascent through dense subtropical forest, with the city's skyscrapers tilting away beneath you. At the top, Victoria Peak (aka The Peak) offers arguably the world's most famous skyline view, a sweeping panorama of Victoria Harbour, Kowloon, and the outlying islands. This is a quintessential Hong Kong experience, blending history, nature, and jaw-dropping urban vistas.
Highlights & What to See
- The Peak Tram Ride – Sit on the right-hand side for the best views as the tram climbs at a 45-degree angle; the sensation of buildings leaning backward is unforgettable.
- Sky Terrace 428 – The highest viewing platform in Hong Kong, offering 360-degree, unobstructed panoramas; aim for late afternoon to see the city transition from day to neon-lit night.
- Peak Circle Walk – A gentle, 3.5-km paved path that loops around the summit, passing through shady groves and opening onto stunning viewpoints—free and far less crowded than the terrace.
- Madame Tussauds Hong Kong – A fun stop for families, featuring lifelike wax figures of global celebrities and local stars.
- Peak Galleria & The Peak Tower – These iconic buildings house restaurants, cafés, and shops; grab a window seat at a café for a coffee with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to fully appreciate the Peak. Arrive mid-afternoon to ride the tram, walk the Circle Walk, and then settle in for sunset drinks at one of the Peak's restaurants or bars. If you're short on time, a 2-hour visit is enough for the tram ride and a quick look from Sky Terrace 428, but you'll miss the magical dusk transformation. The tram queues can be long (especially weekends), so consider buying a return ticket online in advance or taking a taxi up and the tram down.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Central & Sheung Wan – Just at the base of the Peak, these districts are perfect for exploring Hong Kong's colonial architecture, trendy bars, and the historic Mid-Levels Escalator.
- Hong Kong Park – A peaceful green oasis near the tram terminus, with aviaries, a conservatory, and a tranquil lake—great for a pre- or post-Peak stroll.
- Admiralty & Wan Chai – A short walk from the tram station, these areas offer excellent dining (from dim sum to international) and the Hong Kong Arts Centre.
- Repulse Bay – A 20-minute taxi ride south from the Peak leads to this beautiful beach, ideal for a swim or a seafood lunch after your summit visit.
- Ocean Park – About 15 minutes by taxi, this marine-themed amusement park is a hit with families and can be combined for a full day of fun.
