Perched dramatically on a rocky promontory above the deep gorge of the Pazinčica River, Pazin is the historic heart of Istria. This small town is dominated by its mighty medieval castle, which seems to grow out of the cliff itself. Beyond the castle, Pazin offers a genuine slice of Istrian life, with a relaxed café culture and a fascinating underground world waiting to be explored.
Highlights & What to See
- Pazin Castle (Kaštel) – One of the best-preserved medieval castles in Istria, now home to the Ethnographic Museum of Istria. Walk the ramparts for jaw-dropping views over the gorge and the town's red rooftops.
- Pazin Cave (Pazinska jama) – A wild abyss plunging 130 metres below the castle. You can peer into it from the castle walls, or join a guided spelunking tour to explore its subterranean chambers.
- Istrian Ethnographic Museum – Housed within the castle, this museum offers a deep dive into traditional Istrian life, from olive oil production to folk costumes and music.
- Pazin Gorge – A stunning natural canyon carved by the Pazinčica River. Walk the trail along its rim for a different perspective of the castle and the dramatic landscape.
- Church of St. Nicholas – A lovely baroque church in the old town, with a peaceful interior and a small square perfect for an espresso.
Suggested Time to Spend
Pazin is compact and can be seen in a half-day, but to truly appreciate it – including a castle visit and a coffee in the old town – allow a full day. If you're keen on caving, you'll need an extra half-day for the guided tour. It's an ideal stopover on a wider Istrian road trip, breaking up a journey from the coast to the interior.
