Parque Rural De Tamadaba
Parque Rural de Tamadaba, on Gran Canaria’s rugged western flank, is a wild, pine-clad mountain realm that feels a world away from the island’s beach resorts. This protected landscape of ancient Canary Island pines, volcanic cliffs, and deep barrancos offers some of the most dramatic hiking on the archipelago. The air is thick with the scent of pine and eucalyptus, and from the ridge-top miradores you can see all the way to Tenerife’s Teide on a clear day. It’s a place for genuine immersion in nature—bring sturdy boots, water, and a sense of adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Pico de las Nieves: Not strictly inside the park but the highest point on the island, offering panoramic views over the park and the Roque Nublo monolith.
- Roque Nublo: The iconic 80-metre volcanic rock pillar, a sacred site for the indigenous Guanches, accessible via a scenic trail from the car park.
- Pine Forest Trails: Hike through the dense Canary Island pine forest on well-marked paths like the GR 131, which traverses the park’s spine.
- Mirador del Balcón: A vertiginous viewpoint perched over the Tamadaba cliffs, with jaw-dropping vistas of the coast and the Atlantic.
- Montaña de Tirma: A volcanic cone with a short, steep climb that rewards with 360-degree views of the park and the sea.
- Barranco de la Virgen: A lush ravine with a small chapel and picnic area, ideal for a quiet break amid the pines.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to properly explore Tamadaba. Most visitors combine the Roque Nublo hike (about 1.5 hours round trip) with a drive along the scenic ridge road, stopping at miradores. For a deeper experience, plan a half-day hike on the GR 131 or a loop trail into the pine forest. If you’re keen on sunrise or sunset photography, arrive early or stay until golden hour—the light over the cliffs is spectacular. The park is easily doable as a day trip from Maspalomas or Las Palmas, but overnight stays are limited to a basic refugio or camping with a permit.
