Parque Rural de Anaga is a rugged, ancient laurel forest sprawled across the northeastern tip of Tenerife. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a world apart from the island’s sun-drenched beaches, offering misty hiking trails, jaw-dropping coastal viewpoints, and a sense of stepping into a prehistoric world. For international travellers, it’s a must-do for a truly immersive nature experience that contrasts brilliantly with Tenerife’s resort life.
Highlights & What to See
- Sendero de los Sentidos – A short, sensory trail through the laurel forest with interpretive signs in English, perfect for a quick immersion.
- Mirador de Cruz del Carmen – The park’s main visitor centre and a stunning viewpoint over the Anaga massif and coast.
- Playa de Benijo – A wild black-sand beach framed by dramatic sea stacks; arrive early to avoid crowds.
- Chinamada – A remote village with cave houses and a local restaurant serving traditional Canarian food.
- Roque de Taborno – One of the island’s most iconic rock formations, best seen from the hiking trail from Taborno village.
- Punta del Hidalgo – A coastal area with natural pools and a lighthouse, great for a post-hike swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan a full day to explore Anaga properly. Most visitors drive the winding roads, stop at viewpoints, and do one or two short walks (1–3 hours). For a deeper experience, overnight in a rural guesthouse and tackle a longer hike like the PR-TF 5.1 from Cruz del Carmen to Punta del Hidalgo, which takes 4–5 hours one way. Combine with a morning in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on your way up.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
